Been a while since I blogged, for a good reason

So there are a few months without posts or with sporadic posts, and here’s why. I’ve been committed to self-acceptance movement called #ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance!® since early 2014. This year was different than in the past, so it took a lot of planning and work, both before and after.

In addition to connecting with the beautiful souls who participated, here are even additional meaningful aspects of 2017. A certificate was signed by Mayor Garcetti, and July 13, 2017 was recognized as “#ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance! Day” in the City of Los Angeles. (So cool!) We got to dance our signature dance, “I’m Original,” at an LA Sparks Halftime. (Amazing experience!).

It was so fun and inspiring! No participant had to be a “dancer” or have any prior dance skills at all. They did need to attend a rehearsal where they’d connect with fellow participants and learn the moves (and that it was totally OK/welcomed to forget or mess up the moves, too! That’s part of self-acceptance.). These parts, along with an openness and a connection to the message were the main requisites. This halftime “show” was not going to be about “performing” or “perfection”—it was going to be about joy, unity, and self-acceptance.

Here’s the highlight reel—I think that you can FEEL all of the above. And here’s the announcer’s speech that brought us all onto court. It tells all about the message.

Announcer:

Today, July 13th, 2017 is #ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance! Day! in the City of Los Angeles! At this time, your Los Angeles Sparks call your attention to tonight’s special halftime show.

Coming onto center court are people like you and me. They’ve travelled from all over Los Angeles, different cities, and even out of state. Some are dancers, and some have never danced before. They have all united to celebrate our diversity and originality! To dance as a community! To empower body, soul, and self-acceptance! Get ready to join in their message. Get ready to #ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance!

And we did–we shook up the norm! We shook it for body, soul, and self-acceptance!
