GENERALIST THERAPY/COUNSELING

  • No matter what your issue is, my goal is for you to feel heard and understood. The rest of the therapeutic process unfolds from there, with your permission and at your pace.
  • I see any person as a whole person. A label, symptom, or problem is just that–not who the person is.
  • Each of us is unique. So our work be, too.
  • Therapy or counseling (whichever term you prefer) can help you to strengthen or discover your innate strengths, solutions, and truths.

Sometimes, people ask about my “theoretical orientations.” If this isn’t you, SKIP THIS!

I work from an eclectic stance with anchors. Non-judgment and genuineness (Humanistic) is foundational as a therapist. I partner with you to explore thoughts and behaviors (Cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT) and unconscious patterns in the way of life you want (Psychodynamic). We look at skills you may want to support you (Dialectical behavioral therapy, DBT). Enlisting a strength-based focus (Postmodern, PoMo) and one focusing on your values (Acceptance and commitment therapy, ACT) tend to help inspire and provide grounding. Finally, we will probably explore the influence of your relationships (Interpersonal Psychotherapy,  IPT) or do some parts work (Internal Family Systems, IFS).

Your therapy is not about my goals for you or telling you what to do. Your wants and participation matter.

Though I have been working in the field since 2007, I regularly attend educational events to keep current, learn about recent developments in the field, and be able to apply cutting-edge approaches.

SPECIALIST THERAPY/COUNSELING

Body Image Issues, Disordered Eating, & Eating Disorders

  • I am a clinician with personal recovery from eating disorders, which brings a unique understanding to the work.
  • While pre-licensed, I was fortunate to be part of a team at Monte Nido Treatment Center led by renowned eating disorders expert Carolyn Costin. I attended  Carolyn’s consultations for many years, and her philosophies greatly influenced my work as a clinician.
  • I practice from a non-diet, weight-neutral/weight-inclusive position.
  • I believe healing, improvement, and recovery are all possible. (It’s OK if you disagree with me.)

I treat from the perspective that eating and body image problems are the symptoms but not the root issues. If working with an individual, my role is to collaboratively help them explore the issues that are underneath the eating problems so that you can move towards and achieve more of the life they want. If I’m working with parents/carers or a family, we look at what’s needed to treat the person with the eating disorder, and we work on the family system to support recovery.

NOTE: Because eating issues can involve medical and nutritional complications, support may require regular medical follow-up and dietary assistance.

Expert consultation

Eating Disorders for Parents, Carers, & Professionals

I offer consultations for different purposes. For example:

  • I’m considered an expert in eating disorders. So feel free to book me to ask anything about eating disorders.
  • If you’re seeking a CEDS-Supervisor/CEDS Consultant. I’m iaedp-approved.

Consultation differs from therapy. A consultation meeting typically provides information, resources, and education concerning eating disorders. It may also address resources and specific needs/wants. Normally, consultation is time-limited.

Reach out. I would like to see how you can get the help you want.
